Mulberry Allergy

The mulberry is a deciduous, ornamental tree that is highly allergenic. The mulberry pollen blooms around the first of April and can last until the beginning of June.

  1. Mulberry seeds

    • The seeds from the fruit begin to become ripe in the summer. Its coloring begins white and then turning to pink, purple and then black.

    Mulberry flowers

    • The flowers on the mulberry tree bloom in the spring producing tiny yellow/green flowers.

    Pollen

    • The airborne pollen from the mulberry tree can cause allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis and asthma.

    Allergic reactions

    • Symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, sinus pressure, itchiness of the mouth and throat, swelling under the eyes, and fatigue.

    Treatments

    • Over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants can be effective. Immunotherapy also can be beneficial. A more invasive procedure involves having extracts from the pollen injected once a week to build up your body's immunity.
