A tattoo is a permanent design or mark made in the skin through pricks that are inserted with a needle into the top layer of the skin. Pigments are injected via the needle. A tattoo allergy is an allergy to the dye used and is most common with red dye. An allergic reaction can occur right away or may occur years later.

    Rash and Blisters

    Itching and Swelling

    • Those with a tattoo allergy may experience itching and swelling. The itching may be associated with a rash or may occur on its own. The area on and around the tattoo may swell if the person is allergic to any of the dyes or pigments used.
