Signs & Symptoms of Shell Fish Allergy

A shellfish allergy, like all other food allergies, is caused by a glitch in an individuals immune system. Some of the proteins in the shellfish are identified by the faulty immune system as harmful, which causes the body to produce antibodies against them. There are several signs and symptoms of a shellfish allergy.
  1. Rash

    • A rash may include hives, which are generally red welts on the surface of the skin. Itching with no redness or irritation may also be present. Another indicator is eczema, which is a dry, scaly rash that is very itchy.

    Swelling

    • Swelling will most likely occur in the lips, tongue or throat. Other parts of the face may also be affected. Swelling in other parts of the body is rare.

    Breathing

    • Breathing will become labored if swelling has occurred in the area of the throat or mouth. Nasal congestion, which will occur when the nasal tissue or nasal blood vessels are swollen or irritated, is also an often seen symptom. Wheezing, a whistling sound that occurs during breathing, may also occur.

    Abdominal Issues

    • If you are suffering from a shellfish allergy, abdominal pain will most likely be present. You may also feel nauseated or experience vomiting. Diarrhea may also be present.

    • Dizziness is a predominant symptom with a shellfish allergy. Lightheadedness and fainting are also symptoms.

    Tingling

    • Tingling may be present in the mouth after exposure to shellfish. The feeling is similar to a foot or hand falling asleep.

    • Feeling as if your pulse is pounding in your veins is a symptom of a severe shellfish allergy that is potentially life threatening.

    • The feeling of a large lump in your throat that seriously impairs your ability to breathe is a sign of anaphylaxis, a more serious allergic reaction that is life threatening and needs to be treated right away.
