According to Teens Health from Nemours, whey is the watery component of milk. Whey is one of two proteins that make up milk, and milk is approximately 20 percent whey. It is possible for an individual to become allergic to whey in dairy products. There are several signs and symptoms of a whey allergy.
  1. Gastrointestinal Problems

    • According to Caring Medical and Rehabilitative Services, a whey allergy can manifest itself through digestive problems. An individual who is allergic to whey may experience symptoms ranging from gas and bloating to nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

    Skin Problems

    • A whey allergy can dramatically affect the condition and appearance of skin. Caring Medical and Rehabilitative Services states an individual with a whey allergy may develop an itchy rash or hives. He may appear to have black eyes caused by dark circles under the eyes. He may also experience swelling of the facial areas, including the mouth, tongue and throat.

    Respiratory Problems

    • A whey allergy can sometimes cause severe respiratory problems. An individual who is allergic to whey may experience nasal congestion and runny nose and eyes. She may also notice her eyes becoming itchy. Wheezing and shortness of breath can be caused by a whey allergy. In the worst cases an individual with a whey allergy can go into anaphylactic shock and stop breathing altogether.
