Soybean Allergy List

Soybean allergies range from mild to severe. They can cause reactions from indigestion to hives to breathing problems or even death. There aren’t any magic pills you can take to alleviate a soy allergy; you simply must avoid eating foods with soy in them. Many of those experiencing a soybean allergy are children younger than 5, but it can affect people of all ages. It may be only a temporary condition, or it may be lifelong. You may not be a vegetarian, but chances are you run into soy on a daily basis, and sometimes navigating your way around it can be difficult. Following is a list of foods to watch out for.
  1. Soybean-Based Foods

    • These are food that are almost entirely made of soy. They are relatively easy to identify as foods to avoid once you can recognize them. Look out for:

      -Cooked soybeans: Small, soft brown soybeans
      -Edamame: Fresh green soybeans, in or out of the pod
      -Miso: Soybeans fermented into a paste often used in Japanese miso soup
      -Soy sauce: Soybeans salted and fermented into a common condiment
      -Soy milk: Soybeans processed into a milk-like liquid
      -Tempeh: Soybeans fermented into a crumbly brown block
      -Texturized Vegetable Protein: Soybean protein often used as a meat replacement
      -Tofu: Soybeans processed into white blocks that may then be eaten in a number of ways, including fried, baked, crumbled or blended into a custard. Also known as bean curd
      -Vegetable oil: Some, but not all, vegetable oils contain high percentages of soy.
      -Also keep an eye out for soy burgers, soy ice cream, soy cheese, soy flour and other products with the word soy in their name.

    Processed Foods That Include Soybeans

    • There are many foods out there that contain soybeans that you wouldn’t guess had soy in them. When you have a soybean allergy, you must always read the available ingredient list and look for terms indicating that they contain soybeans.
