What Are the Treatments for Mushroom Allergy Symptoms?

Mushroom allergies are very rare, affecting only about 1 percent of those who suffer from food allergies. Mushroom allergy symptoms are the same as those of any food allergy and are treated similarly.
  1. Antihistamine

    • Antihistamines such as Benadryl are a recommended treatment for mushroom allergies. This medication will decrease swelling and clear up mucus.

    Decongestants

    • Decongestants are also an option. They will contract the blood vessels, which will decrease the flow of blood to the nose and lungs.

    Allergy Shots

    • Allergy shots release a small amount of what you are allergic to into your body so that your body learns to no longer react to mushrooms.

    Steroids

    • Steroids are another common treatment and are available as nose sprays, pills or eye drops. They help to “short-circuit” the immune system’s response to the mushrooms.

    Severe Reaction

    • If your reaction to mushrooms is severe, see a doctor immediately.
