What to Do About Dry Rot Allergy?

Allergies affect more than 40 million people in the United States, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Allergies can be triggered by various factors including the weather, environmental issues and excess mold or fungus. The body responds to the allergen by producing histamine. The excess histamine causes the common allergy symptoms of itchy, watery eyes, runny nose and skin irritations. Dry rot is among the various molds and fungi that cause an allergic reaction. Dry rot is caused by a fungus that slowly rots the wood of a house.
  1. Avoid Dry Rot

    • The AAAAI says that the best way to cure an allergy is to avoid the allergen. Take note of when you experience severe allergic symptoms. If you notice that you typically react at work, talk to your supervisor about possible dry rot in or around your office. Take a look around your workplace and identify any possible dry rot. Dry rot is typically obvious because it is a rotting of a wall or another important structure. Look for the presence of water because the fungus causing the dry not needs water to survive. Avoid anywhere you notice dry rot or ask to have it removed and fixed.

    Remove the Dry Rot

    • The College of Family Physicians of Canada says that you can easily kill the fungus and remove the dry rot. Use a bleach solution of equal parts water and bleach to kill the fungus that is causing the dry rot. Place the solution in a spray bottle and apply liberally. Allow to dry and then reapply to ensure all the fungus is killed. Remove any wood or drywall that appears to have been rotted by the fungus and replace with new materials. Lowering the humidity in your home by running a dehumidifier can also reduce the chances of the dry rot returning.

    Use Medication

    • The most common medication for a dry rot allergy is to take a daily, 24-hour antihistamine such as loratadine or cetirizine consistently as long as you are affected by the allergen. Stronger over-the-counter antihistamines are available but can make you very drowsy, restricting your normal active performance. Drink plenty of water when taking an antihistamine, as the drug can dehydrate you. Drink at least six 8-oz. glasses of water a day.
