What to Do If You Are Allergic to Clavamox
Clavamox is a veterinary approved broad-spectrum antibiotic for use in cats and dogs. It is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. The human version of the same drug is marketed under the name Augmentin. It is used to treat many respiratory infections such as sinusitis, pneumonia and bronchitis, as well as urinary tract and skin infections. Clavamox and Augmentin belong to a group of antibiotics known as penicillin antibiotics and can cause allergic reactions.-
What Are Allergic Reactions?
-
Allergic reactions are categorized by severity. It is not recommended to take Clavamox or Augmentin if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any penicillin-based antibiotic, regardless of severity; the reaction is likely to recur and may become more severe. Handling Clavamox that has been prescribed for your pet should not cause an allergic reaction in people who have sensitivities to pencillin unless accidentally consumed.
Symptoms of Allergic Reaction
-
A severe allergic reaction to Clavamox or Augmentin may include hives, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and/or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms in association with consuming the medication, seek medical attention immediately. Anaphylaxis can be a fatal condition if not treated immediately. Lesser reactions include digestive upset, skin rash, itchiness, and headache. While usually not life threatening, it is important to note these symptoms and report them to your doctor right away.
Considerations
-
According to veterinarian Rebecca Bennett, Clavamox should be handled carefully by individuals who have been diagnosed with a sensitivity to penicillin-based antibiotics. Careful handwashing after each administration will help reduce the chance of accidental ingestion. Also, never place opened or unopened containers in the mouth. Handling the excrement of animals currently taking Clavamox shoud also be treated with care. Depending on the owner's sensitivity level, a veterinarian may choose to prescribe a different medication.
