Chronic Fungal Sinusitis Treatment
Chronic fungal sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses' lining that is caused by fungal infection. Sinusitis infections are considered chronic when they last more than 12 weeks. A combination of medications is used to treat the condition.-
Antibiotics
-
Most cases of sinusitis are treated with antibiotics, according to the Medical University of South Carolina. The antibiotic used will depend on what fungus causes the infection and the patient's medication allergies.
Oral Steroids
-
Oral steroids are often prescribed for two to eight weeks, according to MUSC Health. These drugs have serious side effects such as bone loss and diabetes if used long term.
Nasal Steroids
-
These drugs are prescribed in most chronic sinusitis cases. Occasional nosebleeds are a possible side effect.
Saline Irrigations
-
Nasal saline irrigations are a useful treatment, according to MUSC Health. They flush the nose and sinuses and remove fungal debris.
Decongestants
-
Decongestants may be prescribed to sinusitis patients on an as-needed basis. They may temporarily relieve nasal congestion, a symptom of chronic fungal sinusitis.
Antihistamines
-
Antihistamines are useful in treating patients whose sinusitis is complicated by nasal allergies, according to MUSC Health. These drugs may cause urinary retention, constipation and drowsiness.
