What Is Loratadine Generic For?

Loratadine is a minimally sedating antihistamine that was introduced in 1992. It replaces older antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as an allergy remedy.
  1. Brand Names

    • Alavert is the brand name for over-the-counter Loratadine (10mg tablets). Claritin is no longer a prescription and is now an over-the-counter drug. Store brands sell it as Loratadine.

    Function

    • Loratadine is used to treat runny, stuffy noses; hay fever, itchy eyes, and seasonal allergy conditions. It can also be used to treat asthma.

    Considerations

    • While Loratadine is not as sedating as other antihistamines, it can still have that risk. The tablet is usually taken once daily.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects include dry nose, throat, and mouth; headache, and fatigue. Serious side effects can include dizziness and anaphylaxis (paradoxical reaction). Call emergency personnel for any severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, swelling, hives).

    Warning

    • Do not take Loratadine with grapefruit or grapefruit juice (may raise drug toxicity). Avoid alcohol while on Loratadine (over-sedation).
