What Is Loratadine Generic For?
Loratadine is a minimally sedating antihistamine that was introduced in 1992. It replaces older antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as an allergy remedy.-

Alavert is the brand name for over-the-counter Loratadine (10mg tablets). Claritin is no longer a prescription and is now an over-the-counter drug. Store brands sell it as Loratadine.
Function

Loratadine is used to treat runny, stuffy noses; hay fever, itchy eyes, and seasonal allergy conditions. It can also be used to treat asthma.
Considerations

While Loratadine is not as sedating as other antihistamines, it can still have that risk. The tablet is usually taken once daily.
Side Effects

Side effects include dry nose, throat, and mouth; headache, and fatigue. Serious side effects can include dizziness and anaphylaxis (paradoxical reaction). Call emergency personnel for any severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, swelling, hives).
Warning

Do not take Loratadine with grapefruit or grapefruit juice (may raise drug toxicity). Avoid alcohol while on Loratadine (over-sedation).
