How to Vapor Steam Dust Mites

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, dust mites are one of the leading causes of allergy and asthma symptoms today. One of the most effective methods of killing dust mites in linens is to wash them regularly in hot water with a temperature of at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, not all dust mite friendly surfaces will fit inside a washing machine. Vapor steam cleaning is a great way to kill dust mites in mattresses, upholstered furniture or carpets. There are three easy-to-use machines for steam cleaning: a rented carpet steam cleaner, a steam mop and a handheld clothing steamer.

Before using the steam cleaner, thoroughly vacuum the carpet or piece of furniture to be treated. If there are any visible stains, remove them with a spot cleaner as the heat from the steam could cause the stain to set.

    • 2

Whether using a rented carpet steamer, clothing steamer or a steam mop, follow the instructions when filling the machine's reservoir with water. Depending on the device, it may take several minutes for the machine to heat up.

    • 3

Using slow and even strokes, guide the steamer along the entire surface of the carpet or furniture. Repeat to ensure all surfaces have been penetrated with the hot steam vapor. If steaming an upholstered piece of furniture or mattress, don't forget to steam the underside as well.

Allow the surface to completely dry before walking on the carpet or using the furniture. It is important to steam clean the carpets or furniture regularly to keep the dust mite population at bay.
