How to Control Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are flat, round, brown bugs that invade hotels and homes, and hide in cracks and crevices. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, they go into hiding and sleep during the day and come out at night. They can be difficult to get rid of and feed on blood either from humans or animals. To see if you have an infestation of bed begs, it's recommended you check in the mattress, box spring and sheets in the bedroom. They can also congregate in living rooms, bathrooms and laundry rooms. If you see a dark spots on sheets resembling blood, it's a good indication bed bugs are present.

How to Control Bed Bugs

  Check your mattress for holes or tears. Do it Yourself Pest Control says bed bugs may be hiding in your mattress and laying eggs. If you find holes or tears, it's recommended you get rid of your mattress and replace it with a new one.

  Treat mattress with an insecticide. Crack & Crevice III Phenothrin, Tempo Ultra SC and Eco PCO D-X Exempt Dust are all recommended by Do it Yourself Pest Control.

  Spray night stand, dresses, couches and chairs with an insecticide. You can use the same spray you used on the mattress.

  Spray with insecticide all other areas where you have seen or suspect bed bugs may be hiding.

  Vacuum cracks and crevices with vacuum cleaner.
