How to Tell If I'm Allergic to Milk

Ice cream, cheese and other dairy products can provoke some less than desirable reactions in some people. According to the Mayo Clinic, milk allergy is one of the top eight food allergies. It can manifest itself in a number of symptoms from vomiting and digestive problems to skin rashes and a persistent cough. Since many people are simply lactose intolerant rather than allergic to milk, it can be tough to figure out whether or not you're truly allergic.

Instructions

    • 1

Take note of any abnormal symptoms after you consume milk products such as milk, cheese or ice cream. A few moments to a few hours after you consume milk, you may experience vomiting, indigestion and hives. These are typical indicators of a milk allergy.

    • 2

Watch out for milk allergy symptoms that may take longer to develop, such as diarrhea, loose or bloody stools, a runny nose, abdominal cramps or an itchy skin rash around the mouth. Since they may take weeks to develop, these symptoms may be less obviously linked to a milk allergy, but you should make sure to mention them to your doctor.

    • 3

Consult with your doctor about your potential milk allergy, and make sure to mention how many milk products you consume regularly as well as any symptoms you've experienced after ingesting dairy products. He may determine that you're simply lactose intolerant, which is a food sensitivity rather than a food allergy.

Follow a treatment plan outlined by your doctor, and take note of whether you experience any of the previous symptoms that led you to believe you have a milk allergy. If you continue to experience these symptoms, this may be a sign of a completely separate illness, and you should once again visit your health care provider to determine the cause.
