Sinus Cleanses for Allergies
People who suffer from allergies generally have to deal with the pain and discomfort of swollen, inflamed sinuses. While antihistamines and over-the-counter pain medications are helpful, some people turn to home remedies and alternative medicine to provide on-the-spot relief. Nasal irrigation is one popular method used by allergy sufferers to clean the sinuses and provide relief.-
At-Home Saline Solution Method
-
A simple recipe for a nasal irrigation solution is 1/4 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. baking soda mixed into 8 oz. of warm water. The sinuses can be cleansed by cupping the saline solution in a hand and pouring it into an upturned nostril. Hold your head over a sink and keep your head turned to one side. Breathing should be done through the mouth, slow and even, while the irrigation is taking place. The process should be repeated for the opposite nostril.
Neti Pot System
-
The neti pot system has been in use since the time of ancient yogis, who would cleanse the sinuses daily to aid with deep breathing exercises. Today, it is marketed by many different companies (NetiPot, SinuRinse, etc.), but the concept is similar: A warm saline solution is added to a teapot-like vessel and is administered to the nostrils through a long spout. Most of the varieties sold today come with packets of salt mixture that can be dissolved in warm water.
Irrigation Machines
-
Nasal irrigation has gained popularity among chronic allergy sufferers. So much so that companies (SinuPulse, Grossan Hydropulse, etc.) are now developing irrigation and sinus wash systems. The saline solution concept remains the same. The difference is that water pressure levels can be manipulated, which is designed to create a thorough cleansing.
Benefit
-
Frequent nasal irrigation is beneficial for allergy sufferers for many reasons. The gentle flushing helps to rid the sinus cavities of pollen and other irritants, while the salt solution can help to alleviate swelling. It also helps to relieve blockages in the nasal cavities.
