Natural Treatment for Hives in Toddlers
-
Causes
-
Hives in toddlers are most often caused by a virus, an allergy, food, medicine and irritants such as soaps and detergents. Most often, they will only last one to two days but may come and go for several weeks even when the original cause is no longer apparent.
Significance
-
Most outbreaks of hives in toddlers are not harmful and often clear up on their own. However, some children can be bothered by the itching that often accompanies hives or have a fever and risk infection.
Antihistamine and Creams
-
Traditional treatment for hives in children includes antihistamines such as Benadryl. Calamine lotion and milk of magnesia can be applied to the skin to ease the rash and itching.
Home Remedies
-
A tea made of brewed rosemary leaves and bark, or red Alder, can ease a toddler's symptoms. Keep room temperatures moderate and keep your child calm; a cool shower also may help.
Herbal Treatments
-
Bilberry capsules, papaya supplements or papaya juice and stinging nettle leaf juice are used to treat hives in children. A mixture of chamomile, dandelion, euphorbia, alfalfa and hypericum combined with the Bach Flowers rock rose and walnut will relieve allergies, treat the hives outbreak and soothe the skin.
Aloe Vera Gel
-
Aloe vera gel applied to the skin will help calm the rash and ease the itch of hives. It will also reduce inflammation and protect against infection.
