Recipe for Neti Pot Wash Solution

Many people suffer from sinus problems which occur for a variety of reasons including direct reactions to allergies and environmental toxins. A natural remedy--used by Yogis in India for many years but just catching on in America--is the neti pot. The term neti is derived from an Indian medical phrase "jala neti" which literally means water but refers to this nasal cleansing. During a wash, a salt solution in the neti pot is poured into each nostril to clean your sinus passages. The solution can be purchased or you can make a simple saline wash right at home.
  1. Nasal Cleansing

    • Due to a commonly high exposure to dust and pollution, our body's filtering mechanism often becomes overloaded. Regular cleansing of the nasal passages allows them to operate more efficiently, thus keeping you healthier. A neti pot resembles a tea kettle. The cilia, or tiny nose hairs, defend against allergens and keep the nose clean. These cilia--when they get damaged over time due to sinus problems and allergies--work less effectively. Regular nasal washing, however, can help the cilia work again.

    Nasal Wash Solution

    • You only need table salt and distilled water to mix a homemade neti pot solution. Add 1/8 tsp. of salt into one cup of water. Tap water is not recommended. If you do not have distilled water, boil tap water. Let it cool to room temperature and add the salt. You may also purchase a pre-made nasal wash---they are often sold with the neti pot---but mixing it yourself is less expensive.

    Efficacy of Homemade Solutions

    • Made correctly, homemade nasal washes are just as effective as over-the-counter solutions, according to allergy and asthma specialist James T. Li, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic. Adhere to the directions for the salt per distilled water ratio. Also, if you choose to boil the water, make sure the water is not too hot as this could further irritate your nasal passages. If you are experiencing serious sinus symptoms or do not find relief, consult an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.
