Sabadilla Remedy for Sinus Congestion

Sabadilla is a homeopathic remedy for hay-fever, allergies and sinus congestion. Sabadilla has been used for a variety of ailments over the past centuries. As with any type of non-traditional medicine, there are inherent risks and dangers.
  1. History

    • Sabadilla was first discovered as a medicinal plant in the 16th century by natives in Central and South America. Upon its discovery, it was first used mainly for lice and parasitic intestinal worms. Around the turn of the 19th century, Sabadilla was also used as a palliative for hay-fever. As a homeopath, Sabadilla produces symptoms similar to those of a cold or hay-fever. The theory is that if you take enough Sabadilla, in diluted forms, that you will develop resistance and immunity to allergens that cause hay-fever and sinus congestion.

    Alternative Uses

    • Sabadilla was also used to help cure fever, tonsillitis, diptheria, sore throats and parasitic worms, both in humans and in dogs. According to Botannical.com, Sabadilla was also used in Europe for acute rheumatism, gout and inflammation. It was also used as a topical anesthetic if put on unbroken skin, but if it was applied subcutaneously, it caused violent pain reactions. During the 20th century, Sabadilla was also used as a pesticide for crops, noting that in concentrated levels it produced mortality in bees and other insects. In 1986, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that Sabadilla was safe for use as an "organic" insecticide. Sabadilla is considered to be among the least toxic of botanical insecticides and is sold as an insecticide for home lawns and gardens.

    Possible Side Effects

    • Although the EPA has cleared Sabadilla as an insecticide, there are older studies that claim Sabadilla has a potential for toxicity. Poisoning symptoms may include retching, muscle spasms, slowed heart beat and decreased blood pressure. According to Botannical.com, Sabadilla has a risk of fatality due to paralysis of the heart in high doses. Currently, the EPA does not expect that Sabadilla will have high mobility in soils and only presents minimal risks to small mammals.

    Warnings About Homeopathic Medicine

    • Homeopathy means treating an ailment with a smaller, diluted dose of the same type of substance that is causing the ailment. Homeopathic medicine is not intended as a substitute for medical advice. If you choose to utilize homeopathic, herbal or alternative medicine, be aware that there is a chance that without seeking professional medical advice, you could make the symptoms worse.
