What Is Entocort EC?

Entocort EC is the name brand for the generic drug, oral corticosteroids. It has the generic ingredient, budesonide. Entocort EC comes with side effects, cautions and warnings, drug and food interactions, and a special population advisory.
  1. Prescribed For

    • Entocort EC is prescribed for a variety of disorders. These include cancer, arthritis, severe skin diseases, disabling asthma, attacks of multiple sclerosis (MS), gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, and inflammation of the heart and other organs.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects are divided into four categories: most common, common, less common, and rare. Entocort EC has side effects in all categories; the most common are headache, acne, bruising and respiratory infections.

    Cautions and Warnings

    • Entocort EC should not be used by anyone who is allergic to its ingredients, which include sulfite preservatives and tartrazine dyes. Entocort EC compromises the immune system and may mask the symptoms of infections; long term use and high doses come with additional warnings.

    Interactions

    • Entocort EC may interact with drugs such as oral anticoagulants, contraceptives, anticonvulsants, and aspirin. Your doctor may have to adjust dosages. Entocort EC can also interact with grapefruit. Grapefruit juice doubles the amount of some oral corticosteroids absorbed by the blood.

    Special Population

    • For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, long-term use of corticosteroid at high doses may cause birth defects. The drug may also pass into breast milk. Seniors are likely to develop high blood pressure, and older women are susceptible to osteoporosis.
