Holistic Cure for a Stuffy Nose
A stuffy nose may be caused by a variety of culprits: outdoor allergies such as trees, pollen and grass or indoor allergies such as dust, mold or indoor pets. There are plenty of over-the-counter and prescription medications available but those can be expensive. Try these holistic remedies first.-
Apple Cider Vinegar
-
Anytime an allergy symptom surfaces, try some apple cider vinegar. It contains malic acid which helps strengthen the immune system and ward off diseases. The main drawback to this liquid is that it has a pungent taste. If you can stand to drink it by itself, go for it. Otherwise, try diluting it with water or mixing it with an unsweetened fruit juice to make it more palatable. Drink two to three cups of apple cider vinegar a day.
Steam
-
Breathing in steam is a great method to clear up a stuffy nose. You can do it in a couple of different ways. The best is access to a gym or YMCA that has a steam room, or at least a sauna. These provide the greatest amount of steam in a small space. You can also create a steam bath in your own bathroom. Close the door, turn on the hot water, and sit in there for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Steam will help loosen up phlegm in your chest as well as the mucus in your nasal passages.
Exercise
-
Daily exercise, especially of the cardiovascular variety, can help open the sinuses. Try to get at least half an hour of cardio exercise a day, five days a week. This can include swimming, walking, bicycling, dancing, jogging, or any other activity that increases heart rate.
Yoga is another form of exercise that aids in mucus drainage. It focuses on breathing techniques and, like cardio, enhances overall lung function. Try combining cardiovascular training with yoga once or twice a week to help clear up a stuffy nose.
Herbal Supplements
-
Take a daily supplement to reduce mucus production. Vitamin C is a great choice as it helps guard against the common cold and allergies. Some vitamins, like magnesium, zinc, and calcium, help protect the immune system. Another herb that is popular is Echinacea. During cold and flu season, this herb can help fight off allergic symptoms associated with these illnesses. All these supplements can easily be found at most drug stores, supermarkets or health food stores.
