Natural Remedy for Hay Fever

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, causes symptoms that are similar to colds such as sinus pressure, runny nose, congestion or sneezing. According to the Mayo Clinic, hay fever is caused by airborne allergens found either indoors or outside, from sources such as pollen, pet dander or dust mites. Hay fever may occur throughout the year, but is especially prevalent in the summer, fall and spring seasons.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of hay fever occur after an exposure to allergens, and may affect daily life. According to the Mayo Clinic, hay fever may cause irritability, sleeplessness and fatigue, which can worsen during the seasons where hay fever is most common. Sources of pollen come from weeds, grass and trees, which cause seasonal allergies among individuals, while year-round allergies may be caused by indoor sources like mites, mold or even pet dander.

    Alternative Remedies

    • The Mayo Clinic indicates that individuals use herbal remedies to deal with symptoms of hay fever. Additionally, the University of Maryland's Complementary and Alternative Medicine department (CAM) suggests that herbal remedies may strengthen the body to treat disease and symptoms of hay fever. Before taking any herbal remedy, get the approval of a physician. Some herbs may cause side effects or negatively interact with other medications or supplements you may be taking.

Stinging Nettle is a common herbal remedy for hay fever, and the CAM department suggests that the herb may help reduce symptoms of the allergy. Take 600 mg capsules each day for one week to reduce symptoms of hay fever. Butterbur has been useful in treating lung ailments and reduces the production of mucus. Take 500 mg capsules each day, no longer than 12 to 16 weeks as side effects may include drowsiness, upset stomach or headache.

    Other Natural Remedies

    • According to CAM, acupuncture has been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for those who suffer from hay fever. The study showed that acupuncture worked as well as allergy antihistamines, and symptoms were treated for a longer period of time.
