Neti for Sinus Treatment

A common and easy solution to sinus problems would be antihistamines and decongestants found at the drug store. An alternative, efficient and affordable remedy, however, is the neti pot.
  1. What

    • A neti pot is a ceramic or plastic spouted instrument used to clear the sinuses.

    Why

    • According to Mayo Clinic asthma and allergy specialist Dr. James T. Li, a neti pot can be used for nasal allergies, sinus problems or colds. Laura Johannes of the Wall Street Journal reports that "The neti pot is used to cleanse mucus from the nasal passages, and may also help rinse out allergens."

    How

    • "To use the pot, tilt your head forward over a sink, slowly pour the saline water into one nostril, and let it flow out the other nostril," Kathleen Engel wrote in a May 2008 article published in Natural Health magazine.

    When

    • Like most medicines and treatments for allergies, there is a suggested frequency of use. According to Engel, you can use your neti pot up to two times daily.

    Where

    • A neti pot can be purchased at a health food store or online---usually for under $20.

    Effectiveness

    • Li reports that "Some neti pot enthusiasts say that regular use of a neti pot is more effective for nasal allergy and sinus symptoms than are over-the-counter medications."
