How to Make a Nasal Wash

Nasal washes are an effective method for treating allergies and sinus problems, and they can easily be made at home. They have gained in popularity, because they are a natural alternative to over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs, which often have undesirable side effects. Nasal washes work by clearing irritants, allergens, bacteria and mucus from the sinuses. When used regularly, they can alleviate upper respiratory problems such as congestion, sinus pressure, itching and sneezing.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Wash your hands. Combine salt and baking soda in a small bowl.

    • 2

Add lukewarm water and stir with a spoon until all ingredients dissolve.

    • 3

Pour solution into a rinsing device, such as a Neti pot or irrigation bottle. A Neti pot looks like a small teapot and can be purchased at your local drugstore. If using a bulb syringe, suction the solution into the bulb.

    Washing

    • 4

Stand over a sink or shower and look down. Breathe through your mouth. Insert the rinsing device into one nostril.

    • 5

Squeeze the liquid into your nose until half of the solution is gone from the container. The solution will flow out of your other nostril. If some solution flows down your throat, don't be alarmed; this is normal.

    • 6

Repeat with the other nostril until all solution is gone.

    • 7

Wash and dry the rinsing device for future use.
