Over-the-Counter Allergy Relief

Allergies are triggered when your body has an abnormal reaction to a normally harmless substance such as pollen, cat dander or mold. Common symptoms of an allergy attack are congestion, sneezing, headache and runny nose. Luckily, there are plenty of over-the-counter allergy medications available, but it is good to know which is the best one for you.
  1. Antihistamines

    • Your body reacts to allergen particles by releasing chemicals called histamines in your nose and sinuses. These chemicals cause changes in your nasal cavity where the tissues swell and become itchy. Antihistamines work by blocking this reaction by your body. Over-the-counter antihistamines include Benadryl, Zyrtec, Dimetapp and Tavist. They are best for itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing. Side effects of these drugs include drowsiness, loss of appetite and stomach pain.

    Decongestants

    • In an allergic reaction, it is common for your production of mucus to change. Your body will begin to produce more and thicker mucus than normal, which results in trouble breathing through the nose and a feeling of fullness in the head. Decongestants help reduce this pressure and make breathing easier. The most popular decongestant is Sudafed. Possible side effects of Sudafed include nervousness, raised blood pressure and light-headedness.

    Topical Corticosteroids

    • Sometimes touching an allergen can cause an allergic reaction on the skin, such as a rash, hives or blisters. To treat these symptoms you can buy corticosteroids in cream form to put on the skin. The best to use is generic cortisone cream or Cortaid. Simply apply to the affected area. There are few side effects from topical corticosteroids, but you may experience dry skin, burning or more red skin from use.
