Levmetamfetamine Side Effects

Levmetamfetamine is the active ingredient in many nasal decongestants. It is used to relieve congestion brought on by several different conditions. As with any medication, use of levmetamfetamine can result in unwanted side effects. A doctor should be consulted before using nasal decongestants. This medication is most widely available in cylindrical plastic nasal inhaler form.

    • Levmetamfetamine is a medication that is used to relieve nasal congestion. Nasal decongestants promote nasal drainage and the relief of nasal stuffiness. Nasal congestion can result from any number of factors, including hay fever among other upper respiratory allergies, a cold or sinusitis.

    Side Effects

    • There are several adverse side effects that may be experienced while taking levmetamfetamine. Some common side effects associated with use of this medication are temporary burning, sneezing, stinging, altered taste and increased nasal discharge. Prolonged or frequent use may result in recurring or worsening nasal congestion. A doctor should be contacted if the user experiences a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, shaking of the hands, trouble sleeping, tremors or unusual weakness.

    Warnings

    • The recommended dosage should never be exceeded while using nasal decongestants. Levmetamfetamine should not be used for more than seven days as it may increase the likelihood of experiencing unwanted side effects. A container of this medication should not be used by more than one person as it may cause infections to spread. Levmetamfetamine should be kept out of reach of children. Women who are pregnant or nursing need to contact a doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.

    Dosing

    • Each 800 mL pump of air includes between 0.04 and 0.15 mg of levmetamfetamine. This medication should not be used more often than every two hours. Children between the ages of 6 and 11 are recommended to use one inhalation in each nostril every two hours as needed with adult supervision. Adults and children over age 12 can use two inhalations in each nostril every two hours. This medication should not be used in children younger than 6 without the recommendation of a doctor.

    Interactions

    • Use of levmetamfetamine while taking other medications may compromise the effectiveness of the medications being taken. Some medications that may cause adverse reaction when used with levmetamfetamine are antidepressants, high blood pressure drugs, cough and cold medications and allergy medications. A doctor should be consulted before using such medications in tandem with levmetamfetamine.
