Does Pet Dandruff Cause Allergies?

It can be disheartening to plan for and obtain a pet only to find that you have allergies. Your skin may itch, and your eyes may water. Some people with allergies may even have difficulty breathing and cough or wheeze. Is pet dandruff or dander, as it is also known, the culprit? Find out more about pet dandruff and allergies.

  1. Pet Dandruff

    • Pet dandruff has a variety of causes. Dogs may develop dandruff if their skin is overly dry, perhaps because they are not getting enough fat or vitamins in their diet. Less common causes include parasites or a fungus. On the other hand, cat dandruff, more commonly called cat dander, is caused by the constant grooming that cats do. As they lick their coats and hair, cats leave a coat of saliva over their fur. The saliva dries up and flakes off, sometimes to the point where cat owners can actually see dandruff flakes on their furniture or clothes. It is the dander, not the actual hair or fur, that causes allergies.

    Pet Dander Allergies

    • You can confirm that you are allergic to pet dander by visiting an allergist. A simple skin-reaction test will tell how sensitive you are to the dander, and the allergist will be able to prescribe treatment. Treatments include allergy shots, pills and creams. She may recommend that you take your pet to visit a veterinarian for suggestions on how to reduce pet dandruff.
      Keeping one or a couple of rooms pet free can help alleviate allergies. However, since pet dander tends to float in the air, even this step may not be sufficient.     Treating Pet Dandruff

    • A veterinarian can help determine the cause of dog dandruff. Regular bathing and brushing may help your dog to have healthier skin. Be sure to use an anti-dandruff shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Each pet should only receive the treatment prescribed for it by the vet. Products intended for one animal may harm another one. Flea rinses and shampoos may worsen dandruff, as they tend to dry your pet's skin out. Since cat dander is caused by a cat's natural grooming habits, you can only try to limit your cat's access to your living quarters.
