How to Fight Allergies That Cause an Itchy Nose

Most people with allergies that cause an itchy nose, suffer from airborne allergies such as pollen, dust or pet dander. Avoid allergens that are causing an allergic reaction. Keep the windows and door closed, if you have outdoor allergies. Stay away from pets if you are allergic to dander and keep your house clean and dust free if you're allergic to dust. Avoid public places where germs and contaminants exist in excess.

Use a saline spray on a daily basis to keep the nasal cavity moistened and clean. Spray two to three sprays in each nostril every two hours on a daily basis. Close the one nostril that is not being treated and breath in while spraying up the other nostril. Reverse nostrils and repeat the process. Use more often if the itchiness returns.

Buy a saline wash from the local pharmacy. Use it on a daily basis, up to three times a day. Fill the container with the saline solution and warm water. Place the container on the right nostril over a sink and tilt the head to a 90 degree angle with the chin facing up. Allow the solution to go throughout the entire sinus cavity and wait for it to empty out the other nostril. Gentle blow the nose when the wash is complete into a tissue. Repeat the same process on the other nose.

Take an over-the-counter antihistamine, such as Benadryl, Claritin or Zyrtec. Take the dose with a full glass of water as antihistamines can dehydrate the body. Follow the recommended dose for the drug of choice. Take the medication as long as you are experiencing the same symptoms.

Run a cool midst humidifier at night while you sleep. Running a cold mist humidifier helps to coat the sinus cavity and keep it from swelling or becoming irritated. Monitor the humidity levels as too much humidity can encourage mold growth. Maintain 40 percent humidity to moisten the sinus cavity and prevent mold and mildew from growing.
