Reducing Solutions for Allergies to Pet Dander

Pet dander is the dry, microscopic flakes of skin that shed from animals when the epidermal layer renews itself, typically every 21 days or every three to four days in pets with skin conditions such as eczema, allergies or mites. Dander is a further source of allergen due to pet saliva or urine irritants that attaches to dander. Dander causes allergy symptoms that may be alleviated by reducing dander and exposure.
  1. Maintain Pets

    • Pet owners with dander allergies can keep a pet from shedding large amounts of dander by maintaining their coat and skin. Purchase pet wipes and wipe down the the surface of a pet's skin daily to remove dander build-ups. Bathe pets with moisturizing, hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners. Apply moisturizing coat sprays or add fatty acid supplements to food for a softer coat that prevents dry, flaky shedding. Treat skin conditions with prescription seborrheic shampoos, oral and topical antihistamines; flea and tick prevention collars; monthly applications of Frontline or Advantix; and antibiotics for infections to reduce itching, biting and shedding.

    Upkeep the Home

    • Dander rests on a pet's skin until falling off and infiltrating carpets, walls, ceilings, furniture, appliances, vents and clothing due to airborne transport. Pet dander accumulates throughout a home, requiring daily dusting and vacuuming. Do not allow pets to remain on furniture, as dander sticks to upholstery and textiles. Dust with electrostatic cloths or wet wipes that attract and lift dander and dust particles from surfaces. Treat carpets and upholstery with anti-allergen solutions and vacuum using allergen filter bags.

    Reduce Contact

    • Limit close contact with pets by reducing hugs, snuggling, petting and kissing as dander allergens enter through the eyes, nose and mouth. Get rid of excess clutter and keep clothing and bedding separate from pets. Restrict the amount of rooms that pets reside in using indoor fences that block off certain areas, particularly bedrooms. Apply a furnace filter to heating systems or cover vents with allergen filters. Use room air purifiers to increase the quality of air. Wash clothing, pet beds, pet toys and any material that comes into contact with pets in allergen wash laundry detergents, such as Allersearch Allergen Wash.
