Grape Allergies in Children

While allergies are frightening at any age, allergic reactions in children are especially dangerous. Since grape allergies are extremely rare, if your child has an allergic reaction while consuming grapes, consider some of the common causes.
  1. Common Allergic Reactions

    • Although only 2 percent of children have food allergies, they can produce wheezing, difficulty of breathing, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and swelling.

    Grape Pesticides

    • Grapes are heavily sprayed with pesticides; a child may have an allergic reaction to the pesticides on the grapes.

    Yeast on Grapes

    • Yeast naturally grows on a grape's skin. If, after peeling the grape, the child does not have an allergic reaction, they are likely allergic to yeast.

    Mold on Grapes

    • The storage environment for grapes is a perfect atmosphere for mold to propagate. Ensure the grapes are free of mold; if there is even a little in the cluster, your child might be allergic to mold.

    Grape Allergies

    • If a child is allergic to grapes and not the items listed above, he or she should avoid grapes in all forms, such as grape juice, jelly or, once older, wine.
