Homemade Cure for Runny Nose

A runny nose can be embarrassing when you're out in public. Even if allergies are causing the problem, fear of disease can cause others to keep their distance. Although medications can stop or ease the running, side effects such as drowsiness can diminish the overall benefits of such medicines. A number of natural homemade remedies, however, work just as well if not better than many commercial medications.
  1. Spicy Foods

    • Though it seems foods high in fiery spices can cause a nose to run much more, they can actually stop the flow. Dr. Gordon Raphael, an allergist, says spicy foods can blast out whatever is causing the flow. Also, heat from spicy foods can cause the nose to release protective chemicals to fight off further infection. Jalapeno peppers, Tabasco sauce and anything else containing capsaicin work well.

    Salt Water

    • A half tsp. salt dissolved in 8 oz. warm water can make a powerful nasal cleanser. When applied through a nose dropper and sucked into the nasal passageways, one nostril at a time, the solution works quickly. After applying, blow your nose hard to remove all salt water.

    Herbal Tea

    • Herbal teas, such as chamomile, send waves of steam into the nose when sipped close to the face. Also, the herbal steam can help stimulate the nostrils and dislodge foreign objects that may be contributing to excess leakage.
