Allergy Symptoms Caused by Swimming

While chlorine is used in pools to prevent the growth of bacteria and the spread of possible infections, it is also a highly toxic chemical that can trigger severe reactions. As a result, some people may experience allergy-like symptoms during or after a swim.

    • Most people who have an allergic reaction to chlorine will develop a rash on the groin area and under the armpits upon exiting a swimming pool.

    • One of the most serious symptoms one can experience from a chlorine allergy is shortness of breath or tightness in the chest, similar to that of an asthma attack.

    • Less threatening symptoms associated with chlorine allergies can be found in the form of burning, itchy or swollen eyes after swimming.

    Coughing or Sneezing

    • Extensive bouts of sneezing and coughing, not to mention a stuffy and itchy nose, can signal an allergic reaction to chlorine.

    Dry or Painful Skin

    • Extremely dry skin may also indicate a chlorine allergy, particularly when the skin becomes tender to the touch.
