Beconaise Side Effects

Beconaise or Beconase is a prescription corticosteroid nasal spray. Despite its effectiveness at relieving hay fever and preventing the return of nasal polyps, Beconase poses a risk for side effects in some patients.
  1. Types of Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of Beconase affect the nose and include burning, dryness, irritation and sneezing. Other possible side effects of Beconase are headaches, nausea and light-headedness.

    Significance

    • Approximately 24 percent of users experience the common nasal side effects of Beconase, while only 5 percent experience headaches and other nonnasal side effects, according to clinical trials published by the FDA.

    Time Frame

    • Nasal irritation from Beconase is typically mild and lasts only a few minutes after you administer the spray. Other side effects usually begin with your first few uses and gradually diminish over time as your body becomes acclimated to Beconase.

    Risks

    • Because corticosteroids suppress the immune system, bacterial conditions like chicken pox and measles are more dangerous and potentially life-threatening in patients who use Beconase. Infrequently, Beconase causes increases of eye pressure, leading to the onset of glaucoma.

    Considerations

    • Because there is no evidence that Beconase poses no threat to fetal development, doctors typically restrict its use in pregnant women unless there is no safe alternative for treatment. Beconase is not safe for children under six years of age, and has the potential to suppress growth in older children.
