Side Effects of Cetirizine Hydrochloride

Cetirizine (brand name Zyrtec) works by reducing the natural histamine levels in your body; thereby alleviating symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and itching. Like all other medications, it is not without risk of side effects.

  1. Drowsiness

    • Cetirizine may cause sleepiness or impair your thinking and reactions. Use caution if driving or performing any activities which require you to be alert. Alcohol consumption may exacerbate drowsiness.

    Common Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com, common side effects also include coughing, headache, sore throat, constipation, nausea and dry mouth.

    Serious Side Effects

    • If you experience any serious side effects, discontinue using cetirizine and contact your doctor. Serious side effects include insomnia, rapid heartbeat, weakness, tremors, severe restlessness, confusion, vision problems, hyperactivity and diminished urination.

    Allergic Reaction

    • If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Signs include hives, rash, breathing problems and swelling of your face or throat.
