Prednozone Side Effects

Prednisone is a corticosteroid medication that is available only with a doctor's prescription. Prednisone is used to treat inflammation in ailments such as ulcerative colitis, arthritis, psoriasis and asthma.
  1. Types

    • Side effects of prednisone include vision problems, sleep problems, headache, coughing up blood, blood in the stool, depression, swelling of the face, weight gain, high blood pressure, low potassium and pancreatitis.

    Significance

    • Contact your doctor immediately if any of the above symptoms occur. Look for fast heart rate and nausea, which may be causes of pancreatitis and low potassium.

    Time Frame

    • Symptoms like swelling of the face or weight gain are usually not serious and will go away when the medication is discontinued.

    Considerations

    • If the negative side effects of prednisone outweigh the benefits of the drug, your doctor may switch you to a different steroid medication or treatment.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Headache can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Sleeping problems can be remedied by over-the-counter sleep aids.
