Nettle Allergy Relief

Nettle is known by many names including common nettle and stinging nettle. It's botanical name is Urtica dioica. Historically it has many uses, from providing allergy relief to helping with autoimmune diseases. It has also been used in a tonic for women. Stinging nettle grows profusely in Europe as well as in America. One amazing fact about nettles is that the sting that the plant delivers can be relieved by the juice of the plant.
  1. What is an Allergy?

    • An allergy is the reaction of the autoimmune system, specifically immunoglobulin E, to a substance. Your body thinks that it is being attacked and then goes on the offensive. In the process, inflammation occurs which causes histamines to be released. That is why we need an antihistamine when allergies flare.

    • Nettles can be used in everything from tinctures to teas to poultices. Stems and leaves are primarily used, but sometimes the roots are included in preparations as well. Nettles are recommended for treating allergy symptoms because they have the capacity, according to researchers a 2006 study at the University of Maryland, to lessen the body's histamine reaction. Use 600mg of the dried herb in capsule form or, if using a tincture (a liquid solution of alcohol and herb), between ½ to 2 tsp. per day for favorable results. Use smaller dosages at first to ensure you don't have a negative reaction. To make a tea of nettle, use a tea ball, fill it full of the dried herb and using a three quart pot add filtered water. Bring to a boil, and let it steep for fifteen minutes. If you like, add your favorite sweetener. Nettle creams and homeopathic remedies containing nettle are also available from health food stores.

A few words of caution: nettles can affect menstrual cycles, and they should not be used during pregnancy. If you are taking blood pressure medication, be aware that nettles can lower your blood pressure. Drink lots of water when using nettle as it also acts as a diuretic.
