Middle ear and sinus infections commonly appear together because of their close proximity. Many times, one infection will settle in either the ear or sinus and will spread to the other. Middle ear and sinus infections are common and can easily be treated with the appropriate medication.

    • Middle ear and sinus infections are commonly caused by the common cold, allergies and a weakened immune system. The infection is a result of excessive congestion and an over-production of mucus.

    Treatment

    • The most common treatment for middle ear and sinus infections is antibiotics. Some doctors may also recommend taking an over-the-counter decongestant or mucus expeller to help the body heal itself.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a middle ear and sinus infection include severe congestion, nasal drainage, head and ear pain, difficulty hearing and discharge. Some people develop a fever and chills.

    Prevention

    • Preventing a middle ear and sinus infections begins with recognizing early signs of congestion. Taking a decongestant in the early stages of nasal congestion can prevent infection from developing in both the ear and sinuses.

    Complications

    • If a middle ear and sinus infection go untreated, it can result in the infection spreading into other areas of the body such as the chest, the eyes and the brain. When this happens an individual may need to be hospitalized.
