Clariton Side Effects

Our bodies produce a chemical called histamine, which can cause sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose. In some people, this chemical causes more severe symptoms. As an antihistamine, Claritin can reduce these symptoms. It also has some potential side effects. Read on to learn about the most common ones, but be aware that people have occasionally experienced other types of side effects as well.
  1. Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects of Claritin include hives, difficulty breathing, lightheadedness, fast or uneven heart rate, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) or seizures.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • Headache, anxiety, drowsiness, stomach ache, diarrhea, dry mouth, sore throat, hoarseness, redness of the eyes, blurred vision, nosebleed, and skin rash are less serious side effects of Claritin.

    Getting Help

    • If you experience serious side effects, seek help immediately. If you experience less severe ones, talk to your doctor. Use your best judgment, too--blurred vision may be less serious, but if you have trouble seeing or an uncontrollable nosebleed, seek help immediately.

    Reporting Side Effects

    • You can, and should, report side effects to the FDA. This helps them to monitor the drug's success rate and adverse reactions. Call 1-800-FDA-1088 to report side effects of the drug.

    Warnings

    • People who are allergic to loratadine, or desloratadine, people with liver or kidney disease, or children under six should not take Claritin. Nursing women may be advised to stop taking Claritin, and pregnant women should talk with their doctor about taking Claritin. Talking with your doctor before beginning a new medication is always a good idea, and you should definitely talk with your doctor if you are taking other medications.
