Dust Mites Allergy Symptoms

Dust mites are microscopic organisms that accumulate in humid conditions and warm weather, infiltrating bedding, textiles, furnishings and carpets. Dust mites are categorized as environmental allergens, causing a range of allergic and asthmatic reactions in sensitized individuals as they become airborne and inhaled.
  1. Identification

    • Environmental inhalants, such as dust mites, enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth, resulting in inflammation of the nasal and lung passages.

    Considerations

    • Mild allergy symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes may occur when in contact with high concentrations of dust and can worsen with prolonged exposure.

    Effects

    • Severe allergies to dust mites cause frequent and persistent symptoms of sneezing, coughing, throat irritation, congestion, sinus pressure, migraines and fatigue.

    Effects

    • Individuals suffering from dust mite allergy-triggered asthma typically experience chronic wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and nasal congestion that can lead to severe bronchospasms and asthma attacks.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Dust contains human skin particles that dust mites feed on, commonly accumulating in bedroom spaces due to linens, pillows and mattresses that collect dust and skin. Cleaning bedding, vacuuming, dusting and using hypoallergenic mattress and pillow protectors can reduce dust mites and related allergy symptoms.
