Rhinitis Treatment

Rhinitis is a condition in which the affected person has a runny or stuffy nose that does not seem to go away along with frequent sneezing and nasal itching. It may or may not be allergy-induced. Regardless of the cause, there are several main treatments for rhinitis.
  1. Allergic Rhintis

    • Allergic rhinitis is caused by a reaction to allergens such as dust or pollen in the environment. Symptoms include runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, itchy nose and itching in the ears. It may or may or may not be seasonal.

    Non-Allergic Rhinitis

    • The causes of non-allergic rhinitis are not well understood, though it is speculated to be caused by inflammation. In this type of rhinitis, the immune system is not involved. Symptoms are similar to allergic rhinitis.

    Treatments for Allergic Rhinitis

    • Immunotherapy in the form of allergy shots is available for allergic rhinitis. The shots will work by helping your body build up tolerance for its triggers and will lessen or even stop response to them. This is a good option for people who suffer from rhinitis year-round. It can also be useful if your symptoms are seasonal, but will only need to be done during the period in which you are experiencing your symptoms.

    Treatments for Allergic Rhinitis Continued

    • Other treatments for allergic rhinitis include avoiding your triggers if possible, antihistamines and corticosteroids. Antihistamines will work by blocking your body's allergic response. Corticosteroids work by reducing the inflammation that can be caused by allergens.

    Nonallergic Rhinitis Treatment

    • Decongestants, saline nasal sprays, decongestant nasal sprays and corticosteroid nasal sprays are common treatments for nonallergic rhinitis. Decongestants narrow blood vessels, which reduces nasal congestion. Saline works to flush out irritants and mucus as well as soothe mucus membranes. Corticosteroids help reduce or prevent inflammation.
