Homeopathic Remedies for Hay Fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to airborne pollen. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reports that some 35 million Americans suffer from allergic rhinitis, or hay fever. Your reaction to pollen may be mild or severe, depending on your allergies and the type and quantity of pollen to which you are exposed. If you are looking for a natural treatment alternative, homeopathic remedies may relieve your hay fever symptoms.
  1. Choosing Homeopathy

    • Homeopathy is safe, but you should be aware that sometimes the right remedy might make you feel worse before you feel better. This is called a "healing crisis." To avoid a healing crisis, choose your remedy carefully and begin with a small dose. You may also wish to work with a trained homeopathic practitioner. If you are taking prescription medication, or under a doctor's care, discuss any alternative and complementary treatments you are using or considering with your doctor.

    Ferrum Phosphoricum

    • When you first feel the start of hay fever symptoms, take the remedy Ferrum phosphoricum. This remedy sometimes stops attacks all together and, at other times, lessens their severity. Other indications for this remedy are a runny nose, watery eyes that feel gritty and flushing of the face.

    Allium Cepa

    • You know how you feel when you cut up onions? Burning, watery eyes and a runny nose? If that is the way allergies make you feel, choose the remedy Allium cepa. This is also the remedy to choose if you have a hacking cough that makes you hoarse, a throat that feels raw and sore and the clear mucus coming from your nose makes your nose and upper lip sore.

    Arsenicum Album and Euphrasia

    • If hay fever makes your eyes swell and gives you a wheezing cough, choose the remedy Arsenicum album. Other indications for this remedy include a runny nose that feels stuffy and feeling chilly, anxious and restless. If your eyes are swollen and there is pus or burning tears present, choose the remedy Euphrasia instead. Other indications for Euphrasia include symptoms that are better during the day and worse at night, and a cough that persists in the daytime but goes away at night.

    Natrum Muricaticum

    • If your allergy symptoms are sneezing, watery eyes, dark circles under your eyes, and the mucus from your nose reminds you of egg whites, choose the remedy Natrum muriaticum. Other indications for this remedy include having problems smelling or tasting things.

    Other Options

    • If the discharge from your nose is thick and yellow, choose the remedy Hydrastis. If the discharge is so thick it seems stuck in your nose, try the remedy Kali bichronicum; this is the remedy for mucus that is so thick it causes you to gag. If hay fever makes your eyelids itch, try the remedy Ambrosia. If your nose is stuffy one minute and running the next, choose the remedy Nux vomica. If you have extended sneezing fits, try the remedy Sabadilla.

In addition to these single remedies, there are a few commercial combination products designed to treat hay fever. Read and follow label directions carefully.
