Naturopathic Allergy Treatments
People can be allergic to almost anything from pets to pollen to changes in the weather. Allergies can cause symptoms of congestion and pressure in the head, making you feel horrible. Allergies are treated with medications, such as Zyrtec or Claritin, and with natural treatments like herbs or hydrotherapy. Both are effective in providing relief of allergy symptoms.-
Natural Allergy Treatment with a Neti Pot
-
A neti pot is a form of hydrotherapy. You can purchase one at your local drugstore. A neti pot is used for irrigation of nasal passages, which can drain sinuses and relieve congestion. Tilt head forward and to the side a little and breathe through your mouth. Using lukewarm water and a saline solution, pour into one nostril and allow the water to run out of the opposite nostril. Do this for two to three minutes.
Herbal Remedies
-
Herbal remedies are also available at your local health food store. Eyebright and yarrow reduce congestion. Natural anti-histamines and anti-inflammatory herbs include Dong Quai, gingk, and stinging nettles. Red clover builds up the immune system to provide the body with resistance to allergies. Milk thistle can also be used to reduce allergic and inflammatory reactions because it supports liver health and function.
Dietary Supplements
-
Dietary supplements can be used to add essential nutrients into your diet that you are not getting from food. Important supplements for strengthening the immune system are vitamins A, C and E, as well as zinc. A healthy, well-balanced diet that is low fat and high in complex carbohydrates is recommended. Foods rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids should also be included. Consume lots of vegetables, including green leafy veggies and beets, carrots, onions, squash, etc. Garlic, horseradish and cayenne are also beneficial.
Other Treatments for Allergies
-
Acupuncture claims to aide in the treatment and relief of symptoms due to allergies. Other treatments for allergies include castor oil packs, a hot foot bath or cold cloth applied to the forehead. Congestion can be relieved by the steam from a hot shower or washcloth held over the sinus area. The steam helps to clear the nasal passages and relieve severe stuffiness and head congestion.
