Sinus Allergy Home Remedies
Chronic congestion and sinus pain is a quality of life issue. While medications can take the edge off of allergy symptoms, they produce irritating side effects. Here are some natural ways to combat allergies.-
Natural Remedies

You'll find much anecdotal evidence to support these remedies, but few have been endorsed by the medical community. Consult your doctor if you are concerned about any particular treatment.
Chicken soup has been praised as a natural remedy for illnesses for years, and its properties are not just an old wives' tale. Homemade chicken soup contains anti-inflammatory properties along with soothing steam that can ease a sinus infection.
Apple cider vinegar naturally contains vitamins B1, B2, A and E, and the minerals calcium and magnesium, which reduce allergy symptoms and clear sinus cavities. The high pH of the vinegar also reduces mucus build-up and helps clear airways. Mix a few tablespoons of vinegar in a glass of water; have a glass a day until your symptoms subside.
Used in a chemical combination in Vicks formulas, eucalyptus can be used as a rub, oil or a liniment to relieve nasal congestion. Kali bich, also known as potassium bichromate, loosens hardened yellow mucus associated with sinus infections. It comes in pill form or in syrups.
Lifestyle Changes
-
There are many things you can do in your house to lessen the presence of allergens. Wash bedding and stuffed toys in hot water to remove dust mites and pet dander. Use a vacuum that has a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter and install hardwood floors instead of carpeting. Avoid irritants like large amounts of dust, pollen, or smoke. Check out pollen reports for your area and limit your time outdoors on high-pollen days. Wearing a surgical face mask can help, too. Drink up to eight glasses of water a day and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to flush out any substances that may exacerbate your allergies, like harsh preservatives and chemicals.
The Neti Pot
-
Nasal irrigation can alleviate sinus congestion. A neti pot is a small ceramic pot designed for easy nasal irrigation. Use a pre-packaged saline solution or regular table salt---follow the instructions on the net pot package for dosage. Lean over the sink, keep your chin tilted up and turned toward the side with the nostril you're about to irrigate. Put the neti pot spout into your nostril and raise the pot until the solution enters the nostril, breathing normally through your mouth as the water exits through the other nostril. Use all the solution and then blow your nose gently. Do this with both of your nostrils. Repeat the process if necessary.
