Allergic Reactions to Osteo Bi-Flex

Osteo Bi-Flex, a supplement taken for the osteoarthritis condition, contains two key ingredients recognized for their positive role in improving osteoarthritis in some individuals (especially those with osteoarthritis of the knees): glucosamine and chondroitin. Both ingredients, working together, have been proven to help reduce degradation of the cartilage in joints, as well as stimulate synthesis of it and increase needed lubrication in that area. But not everyone can take Osteo Bi-Flex due to some possible side effects and allergic reactions it can cause.
  1. Shellfish Allergies and Osteo Bi-Flex

    • One component of Osteo Bi-Flex, glucosamine, is sometimes made from the shells of shellfish like crabs and shrimp. Therefore, an individual who is allergic to shellfish would be more susceptible to experiencing an allergic reaction to Osteo Bi-Flex than one who is not. However, according to Medline Plus, some research indicates that the amount of shellfish present in Osteo Bi-Flex is so minimal as to not warrant the ability to cause such a reaction (see link in Resources section below). But caution is always urged when dealing with allergic reactions, as each individual responds differently to various levels of an allergy trigger.

    Iodine Hypersensitivity and Osteo Bi-Flex

    • Due to the iodine content in Osteo Bi-Flex, an existing hypersensitivity to iodine may also result in an allergic reaction when using this product, according to Medline Plus (see link in the Resources section below). Such a reaction (throat swelling) has been documented in the past; therefore, caution is urged for individuals who have this sensitivity and are considering using this product.

    Asthma and Osteo Bi-Flex

    • Both ingredients (glucosamine and chondroitin) have been considered as possible culprits in the exacerbation of asthma conditions for Osteo Bi-Flex users who have asthma. However, no scientific evidence or study supports the validity of these reported cases at present.

    Possible Side Effects

    • Stomach upset, sun sensitivity, headache, skin reactions, nail toughening and both drowsiness and insomnia are possible side effects of using Osteo Bi-Flex. In addition, but rare, is the possibility of experiencing the following: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, heartburn, gas, a loss of appetite and abdominal pain. It is unclear at this time whether eye cataract formation and increased blood sugar levels are legitimate side effect possibilities; however, according to Medline Plus, animal research supports this theory.

    Significant

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there have been some preliminary studies that do indicate a possible link between use of glucosamine and worsening insulin resistance. Therefore, people with type 2 diabetes are cautioned to consult their physician prior to use of any products that contain glucosamine like Osteo Bi-Flex.
