Side Effects of Beconase

Beconase is a brand name for the drug beclomethasone, a corticosteroid nasal spray. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Beconase reduces swelling and inflammation of the nasal tissue. Physicians prescribe this drug to treat allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, runny nose and sneezing. Numerous side effects are possible.
  1. Most Common Effect

    • In clinical studies with Beconase, as summarized by eMedTV, the most common side effect was mild irritation of the nose or throat, experienced by up to 24 percent of participants.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other side effects experienced by 5 percent or fewer of the participants included headache, lightheadedness, nasal dryness, nausea and nosebleeds.

    Allergy-Like Effects

    • Beconase can cause side effects similar to allergies, but these effects typically dissipate with time. They include nasal congestion, occasional sneezing attacks, runny nose and watery eyes.

    Steroid Toxicity

    • With excessive use, Beconase can become absorbed into the bloodstream, causing signs of steroid toxicity. The patient may develop acne, frequent infections, frequent nosebleeds, menstrual changes, unexplained stretch marks and weight gain in the abdomen, face, neck or upper back.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Rarely, some people have an allergic reaction to Beconase. Symptoms are rash, hives, itching and unexplained swelling.
