Tickly Cough Treatment

As the weather begins to change and the temperature begins to drop, individuals may start to experience a tickly cough. Your throat feels itchy and you instinctively try to cough to scratch the itch. It doesn't work and you find yourself in a coughing fit. This isn't even the worst of it. The tickly cough can strike at any time. You may be in the middle of a job interview, or talking to your child's teacher on the phone. Luckily, there are some things you can do to treat this annoying tickly cough.

  1. Cough drops

    • Purchase a bag of cough drops and carry them with you. Cough drops get your throat moist again. The tickly cough is always worse when your throat is dry, so getting your throat wet it key to stopping the cough. The cough drops also contain medication in them to help you stop coughing if you find yourself in the middle of a coughing fit.

    Tea with honey

    • Cold beverages will make a person cough even more, so never take a sip of water if you find yourself coughing. It is better to make a nice hot cup of tea, and add some honey to the tea instead of sugar. One teaspoon is all you need. The honey is sweet and often used to help with tickly coughs. In fact, some cough drops contain honey. The cup of tea will keep your tickly cough away for a few hours.

    Clothing

    • Wear a turtleneck shirt or sweater. Every so often pull the top of the turtle neck over your mouth and nose. Breathe out through your nose and in to your mouth so that you are breathing in warmer air. This will moisten up your throat so that you are not feeling the urge to cough. Do this for two minutes every 20 minutes or so.

    Benylin

    • Benylin is a product designed especially for tickly coughs. It comes in a liquid form for both children and adults. Only use this product when you have symptoms. Since it is a liquid, it begins to work much faster than a pill. It is important that you follow all of the directions on the label and that you consult a doctor before giving this to a child under the age of 2. Pregnant women should also avoid taking Benylin as it is unknown as to whether an unborn baby would be harmed.
