Levocetirizine Side Effects

Levocetirizine dihydrochloride is an antihistamine prescribed to relieve symptoms of seasonal and other allergies, as well as hives. Available in generic form and under the brands Xyzal and Starcet, levocetirizne is effective at treating runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes. Several side effects are possible but not common.
  1. Most Common Effects

    • In pre-approval clinical studies with levocetirizine, the most common side effects occurred in 2 to 6 percent of participants. These included drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue and nosebleeds.

    Cold or Flu-Like Symptoms

    • Another somewhat common side effect was development of a cold or flu-like symptoms, such as fever, coughing, runny nose and sore throat.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other possible side effects associated with levocetirizine include headache, hoarseness, muscle aches, sleepiness and swollen glands.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Rarely, some people experience an allergic reaction to levocetirizine. Signs include a rash or hives, and swelling of the lips, mouth or throat.

    Drug Interactions

    • Levocetirizine can increase the drowsiness effect of other drugs such as alcohol, other antihistamines, muscle relaxants, sedatives, tranquilizers, pain relievers and seizure medication.
