Sinus & Allergy Relief

Sinus allergies can be caused by pollen, pet dander and mold, however, the bodies response to these allergens is the same. Sneezing, sinus pressure, itchy eyes and coughing are all signs of sinus irritations. While there are synthetic medications on the market that treat sinus allergies, home remedies exist to naturally treat allergies and help bring relief. If allergy symptoms persist for longer than seven days, immediately visit a doctor as a sinus infection may be present.
  1. Eucalyptus Vapor

    • The properties within eucalyptus work as an antiseptic as well as an antibiotic to sooth irritated sinus cavities and scratchy throats. Eucalyptus vapor opens airways and reduces the amount of phlegm and mucus in airways and in the sinuses, which is ideal for blocked sinuses. Children under the age of 18 and pregnant women are not advised to inhale or ingest eucalyptus. Side effects from this plant include mild nausea and headaches.

Bring 1 quart of water to a rolling boil. Place the boiling water into a container that will not melt, and put ten drops of eucalyptus oil directly into the water. Drape a towel over the container and lower your head under the towel. Breathe normally for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the eucalyptus vapor to clear sinus cavities.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar contains vitamins B 1 and 2, A and E, as well as calcium and magnesium, which all work to clear sinus cavities and reduce allergy symptoms. Due to the high pH levels within the vinegar, when taken orally it reduces the amount of mucus build-up and clears airways. There are no side-effects associated with properly taking this remedy, thus it is safe for both children and adults.

Mix 2 tsp. of raw apple cider vinegar in 6 oz. of cold or warm water. Stir the mixture for 1 minute to ensure the vinegar and water is properly mixed. If the taste is too strong, dilute with 1 tbsp. of pure agave nectar. Drink this mixture at the onset of allergy symptoms and continue to drink two times per day until sinus allergies are under control.

    Stinging Nettle

    • According to The Mayo Clinic, stinging nettle is an effective home remedy for common allergy problems. Stinging nettle is a natural antihistamine, which works much like over-the-counter allergy medications, but without the negative side effects, such as drowsiness. Stinging nettle is available in two forms: pill format or dried stinging nettle extract. Both formats are equally as effective, however due to the taste of this herb, most enjoy consuming it in the pill form.

When allergy symptoms occur, consume 300 milligrams of stinging nettle per day with 8 oz. of water. The duration of relief varies from person to person, but most experience at least 5 hours of decreased allergy symptoms. For longer relief, consume between 400 and 500 milligrams per day until the symptoms have diminished.
