Signs & Symptoms of a Strawberry Allergy

If you have an allergy, it means that your body reacts in a hypersensitive way to a certain substance. If you are allergic to strawberries, both touching and consuming this fruit can cause a variety of different symptoms for you.
  1. Susceptibility

    • Not everyone is allergic to strawberries. If your family has a history of allergies or asthma, then you might be more susceptible. Those who have an allergy to birch or ragweed pollens are more likely to develop a strawberry allergy. If you are unsure, visit an allergist to get tested.

    Skin Reactions

    • One frequent sign that you may have a strawberry allergy is a reaction of hives or an itchy rash that appears after you are in contact with strawberries. There also can be swelling in specific areas of your body or face. You may need an antihistamine to reduce the inflammation.

    Respiratory Reactions

    • In some cases, you may have symptoms of allergic rhinitis or hay fever. Common reactions include nasal congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing and an itchy throat. If these symptoms make you uncomfortable, an antihistamine should help.

    Dangerous Reactions

    • If you experience a severe allergic reaction, you may suffer asthma or even anaphylaxis. If the strawberries cause an asthma attack, you may have blocked airways, with symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing. You will need a fast-acting inhaler to relax your airways and reduce symptoms. If anaphylaxis occurs, your throat may close and you will need immediate treatment. Emergency medication, such as an EpiPen, should reduce swelling and relieve symptoms immediately.

    Warnings

    • Strawberries and their leaves are used in many products, including teas, medicines, cosmetics and other household items. If you are allergic to strawberries, always check ingredients and make sure to avoid anything where strawberries may be present.
