Gold Allergy Symptoms

Repeated or constant exposure to gold can cause an allergy to develop in some people. While some people are born with an allergy to gold, it is more common to have a gold allergy develop over time, such as from handling or wearing gold regularly. Gold allergy symptoms vary in intensity, as well as from person to person.
  1. Itching

    • A gold allergy can cause itching in the area where gold came in contact with the skin. This is usually in places where there is constant contact, such as on a finger where a ring is worn or on the neck, where a necklace hangs.

    Redness

    • With a gold allergy, contact with gold can cause redness that ranges from pink to angry red. Removing the gold and washing with cold soapy water usually remedies this.

    Rash, Dermatitis, Eczema

    • A rash can develop as a symptom of a gold allergy. This can also develop into an allergic rash known as eczema (more commonly referred to as "dermatitis"). Eczema can cause the skin to crack or break, blister or ooze. If this happens, see a doctor.

    Hives

    • A more rare symptom of a gold allergy is hives. Hives are raised bumps on the skin (much like mosquito bites). They can be localized or spread all over the body. If the hives are mild, they can be treated with over-the-counter medication. More severe cases require medical attention.
