Symptoms of a Halibut Allergy

Halibut come from the family of flounders. Halibut live in the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans and are highly regarded as good fish to eat. Like with other food, some people may be allergic to halibut. An allergic reaction to halibut would be considered a seafood allergy and, in some cases, can be extremely severe.
  1. Skin Rash

    • Depending on the level of the allergic reaction caused by consuming halibut, a skin rash could be mild or severe. A milder skin rash will be pink in color, hot to the touch, and might be itchy. A more severe rash may include hives. Hives are red bumps on the skin that cause extreme itching. In some more severe cases, the hives may cause a burning sensation. Both hives and a rash will go away on their own, and a hydrocortisone cream can be used to relieve any discomfort until then.

    Breathing Difficulties

    • The breathing difficulties that come from an allergic reaction to Halibut can come in two forms. Some may have trouble breathing because swelling in the face or throat has caused airways to restrict. Others may have more asthmatic symptoms, like wheezing or rapid breathing.

    Anaphylaxis

    • Anaphylaxis is the most severe symptom of a halibut allergy. People experiencing this symptom will have severe swelling of the face and throat almost immediately. The swelling will be so severe that it blocks the airway, making it extremely difficult to breathe. Anaphylaxis also makes the blood pressure drop quickly, and this can put the person into anaphylactic shock. If medical treatment isn't immediately sought, this symptom can be fatal.

    Intense Sense of Fear

    • Right before an allergic reaction to halibut happens, a lot of people will experience an intense sense of fear. This is the body's way of saying something bad is about to happen. This sense of fear is almost always immediately accompanied by other symptoms like swelling or difficulty breathing.

    Vomiting or Diarrhea

    • Vomiting or diarrhea can occur with an allergic reaction to halibut. It's the body's way or removing things that are toxic to it. If either of these symptoms occur for a prolonged period of time, they can cause the body to dehydrate. Extra liquids should be consumed to help prevent dehydration.
