Kinds of Allergies

An allergy is an atypical reaction of the immune system to substances that are normally harmless. They may cause wheezing, coughing, rashes or itchy eyes. Some people suffer from allergies without realizing it. Allergies affect at least two out of every 10 Americans.
  1. Pet Allergies

    • Pet allergies can make living with a pet impossible. People may develop allergic symptoms overnight. This makes it important for people to recognize and treat symptoms (e.g., buy a HEPA filter, wash your hands and clean and vacuum regularly). The main cause of pet allergies is pet dander (flakes of pet skin). Other causes include urine, fur and saliva. Those with pet allergies often have itching eyes, wheezing and rashes.

    Mold Allergies

    • Mold is an organism that dwells in many places inside and outside your house, school and place of employment. It's a type of fungus that plays a role in the decomposition of organic matter. It grows in plants and animal matter (such as leaves and food) and grows in moist dark spaces, such as basements. Symptoms of a mold allergy include wheezing, stuffy/runny nose, itchy and watery eyes. People with mold allergies should examine certain foods, such as cheese and buttermilk, for evidence of mold. If mold is present don't eat it.

    Latex Allergies

    • Latex allergies are also known as rubber allergies. People who suffer from this allergy will have allergic reactions to natural latex (the rubber tree's milky sap). There are a few products that contain latex, such as rubber gloves and condoms. Allergic reactions to latex include red, itchy skin and hives. More severe reactions may include life-threatening conditions, such as low blood pressure and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of the severe reaction report to the emergency room immediately or call 911.

    Milk Allergy

    • Those who suffer from allergies to lactose should avoid dairy products. Unfortunately, this can be difficult, as many foods contain it, including healthy ones such as salad dressing and yogurt. Therefore, it's important to read labels. Allergic reactions to lactose may include wheezing, vomiting and hives. Other symptoms include bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence, diarrhea and constipation.

    Nut Allergies

    • Peanuts are responsible for the most allergy-related deaths. Those with nut allergies should avoid all nuts and anything made from them, such as peanut oil. Recognizing nuts in food can be easier said than done; therefore, it's important to read food labels. Just the same, those with nut allergies should also be aware of nuts in other items besides food. For instance, a few people are highly allergic to products containing nuts such as lotions and shampoos. Always check the label for ingredients.
